OUISoc History Project

Welcome to the OUISoc History Project. We hope you’ll enjoy reading about how the ISoc has developed through the years and how the past committees and members have contributed to the wonderful society we have today.

Please scroll along the timeline to view some of the main developments in ISoc’s history and click on a year to learn more about the society at that time. For now, we’ve added information on 2011/12, and over time we hope to uncover more of ISoc’s history and continue to add to the archives insha’Allah.

 
 

Timeline

< 1963
The exact date is unclear but the ISoc was a founding member of FOSIS (Federation of Student Islamic Societies) and so must have existed since before 1963.
1990-1995
Friday Prayers were established at some point between 1991 and 1995 with the aim of:
  • Having Khutbahs in the English language.
  • Having Khutbahs that were more tailored towards the realities faced by students at Oxford University.
  • Providing sisters with an opportunity to pray Jumu'ah (without having to travel to Cowley).
2002-03

2003-04
MARCH
ISoc brothers' football begins.
APRIL
ISoc won Muslim News Awards best student society.

2004-05
Oxbridge Muslim Alumni founded.

2005-06

2011-12
OCTOBER
Prayer room application approved. Click to find the original request to the Vice Chancellor (in our documents archive).

2012-13
OCTOBER
Construction for the Prayer Room finishes and it is open for the first time.
First Q-Club session with CEI's (Crawley Education Institute) Ustadh Saquab.
2013-2014
JUNE - JULY
First Iftaars held during Ramadan in the Prayer Room.
2015-16
OCTOBER
The move of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies from George Street to Marston Road led to the Prayer Room being the only place to pray in central Oxford.
JUNE
First Taraweehs prayed in the Prayer Room.

2016-17
DECEMBER
A fundamental change was made to the constitution, increasing the committee size from 12 to 19, and a new ISoc logo was designed.
FEBRUARY
First ISoc Football Varsity game.

2017-18
JUNE
Raised almost £20,000 for the Human Relief Foundation's Rohingya appeal during Ramadan.
